Preventing gum disease, the leading cause of tooth loss, is gaining new urgency. As research shows gum disease can contribute to heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.
The culprit? Oral bacteria that leak into the bloodstream. Dental health is directly linked to the health of the body, and many diseases may be alleviated by eliminating toxins and inflammation in the mouth.
What can you do? Brush teeth at least twice daily, floss, use mouthwash, and visit your dentist every six months (If you have ever been diagnosed with gum disease, or have had root planing and scaling, deep cleaning, you need to get your perio maintenance cleaning every 3 to 4 months, this is how long it takes for the bacteria to recolonize.)
A diet rich in fruits and green vegetables for vitamin C and calcium is essential to oral health, and B vitamins and CoQ10 are also recommended to maintain gum tissue health.
Your toothbrush should be replaced every three months. If it starts to fray before three months are up, throw it out and get a new one.
Getting a quick an painless Oral Cancer screening test once a year (Comparable to PAP test to prevent Cervical Cancer) is standard of care and can save lives. One American dies every hour from oral cancer. Prevention is the best solution.

This is to inform all of our patients who have PPO dental insurance. Most PPO dental plans have a set dollar amount to be paid out each year. Any benefits not utilized by the end of the plan year are lost. If you have dental treatment that you have been postponing, including routine preventive treatment, please call our office as soon as possible to make an appointment, before your benefits expire.
Sometimes it is possible to complete dental treatment in phases. Depending on individual needs, careful planning to maximize your benefits remaining for 2009 while doing the remainder of treatment the beginning of 2010 can provide you with more reimbursement than waiting to do all treatment in 2010.
Other factors such as deductibles, covered cleanings that you have not used, etc. could result in your losing benefits which you have already paid for. Don’t let your unused benefits expire! Contact our office as soon as possible to reserve time for you or any family members needing treatment. If you have any questions concerning your remaining dental treatment or benefits, please feel free to contact us. We will be more than happy to assist you.
